Our voting system for European elections is like democracy on training wheels: a basic form of Proportional Representation.

You can only vote for parties, not named candidates. And seats match votes... but not very closely.

But even the worst form of PR is about a gazillion times better than First Past the Post.

The last time First Past the Post was used in a European election - in 2014 - one party got 74% of the seats for 44% of the votes.

Even though it's far from perfect, the system of PR we now use put an end to that kind of aberration.

At the last European election, 82% of voters ended up with an MEP they voted for representing their constituency, compared to just 50% of voters who ended up with an MP they voted for in the last general election.
